Comments win prizes

Draw 2 in the nook competition is complete and the following nooklings have email waiting for them.

There are still 10 iPod nanos left in the kitty for coming draws this month.

To be in the running for next week’s draw, create a “question” by using the “question” button in your dashboard.

If you need directions on where to find this button, then try http://[Your Username].nook.com.au/wp-admin/index.php - but remember to replace the [Your Username] bit with the identity you chose when logging into nook.

Scarface21, Neri - where are you?

We are still waiting to hear from these last two winners from draw 1 of the “win an iPod nano” competition. Neri, Scarface21, if your e-mail server has eaten our message then please drop us a line.

For everyone else, there will be three more draws (each of which will result in five winners). So that’s another 15 chances to join the winner’s circle.

Click here for details on how to qualify for the remaining draws.

So, who won the first five iPods?

[Four] [Three] Two lucky people have yet to check their email in-tray (on the account they used when registering with nook).

So far [one] [two] three of the first five winners [has] have replied.

We will add the other [four] names once we have confirmed with them as to how the prize is to be collected.

As for the rest of you, remember there are still three more draws in the coming weeks.

To qualify, write a comment to someone else’s post, use the “question” tool in your dashboard, and/or upload a profile picture.

Wanting help to keep track of interesting items you read at nook? Or maybe you need a hand finding your way back to where you’ve left a comment.

Then take at look at the “Add Friend” and “Manage Friends” tools in your nook dashboard.

There you can bookmark the spots you like the most and/or the ones where you have added a helpful insight.

To build a list of the nook web addresses you would want to revisit, go to:  http://[xxx].nook.com.au/wp-admin/link-add.php — but be sure to replace the [xxx] with your nook username.

You can even add a short description to help remind your future self why this part of nook was worth a second look.

And when you wish to view the full list of saved nook addresses, go to: http://[xxx].nook.com.au/wp-admin/link-manager.php — and again, replace the [xxx] thingy with your nook username.

Give it a try. Then post here to let us know what you think of this tip. ;-)

How to - Review at nook

Keen to write a review about your favourite place - but find you are hitting a road-block? Here’s why.
The “review” option draws data from TrueLocal to help pre-fill the address and telephone number for you.

If the restaurant (or business, or service) is not yet listed with TrueLocal, then our tool stops. (Fear not. On our wish-list for future enhancements is the option to continue writing a review even if the pre-filled address and telephone number are not available).

Try loading it first as a review, and if that isn’t possible, then you can still write about favourite places. Simply write it up as a post instead.

And feel free to tell your friends at the restaurant/business/service that they can consider getting a listing at TrueLocal. It’s free.

Some foodie-nooks — like BigMouth for example — have “dressed up” posts to look like reviews if the item couldn’t be loaded as a review.

Have an event? Click here and there

It’s fabulous to see so many nookettes posting snippets about coming events.

That was certainly one of the thing we had hoped would happen when planning nook. Just log-in and spread the news about “what’s on” in your neighbourhood.

Psst, can we let you in on a little-know secret?

You might be able to double that exposure by also emailing the details to your local Leader newspapers.

And you could triple it, by adding it to Leader’s “Community Calendar” over there at the online newspaper sites.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

If approved by our team of moderators, it’ll feature there as a “What’s On” item in the calendar.

Share your Australia Day pictures

Well, it certainly is quiet around here today. Our guess is that heaps of people are enjoying a long-weekend - perhaps holidaying at some favourite retreat.

Does anyone have some Australia Day (or even long weekend) snaps they wish to share here? We’d love to see ‘em (if only to droll - cause we were indoors manning the nook control panels).

To Upload a Picture

This does require a little skill to master, but once you get it once, it’s as easier as drinking.

  1. Start new a entry - a post, question, or review.
  2. Browse to the photo and click ‘upload’ before clicking ‘publish’. (The ‘upload’ and ‘publish’ buttons are at the bottom of the page. Giving the photo a title is optional - but just make sure you press upload before publish).
  3. Right-click the image once it has uploaded and nominate ’send to editor’ (use ‘original’ for bigger size)
  4. Check the size of image, crop it, reduce or enlarge.
  5. Click ‘publish’ to complete the post, comment or question.

Technical update

The hamster running in the little spinning wheel that powers our “new comment” moderation queue has escaped the cage. As a result, we are experiencing a delay in processing “new comments”.

Its partner powering the “new posts” is soldiering-on without a hitch.

We will have the backlogged comments available as soon as possible. Sorry for the delay.

Show us yours

Hi to all the nookies, nookers, nookettes, nookerati (and the other fabulous suggestions). Anyway, you know who you are. ;-)

Just a quick shout out to all those souls who have personalised their nook with an avatar (profile picture). They look great.

If you haven’t yet uploaded your avatar then you better get a wriggle on. They too will put nook members in the running for prizes.

Tips on how to load an avatar can be found here.

Don’t ask us to pick a favourite. We love them all. But have you seen one that made you laugh out loud, go “oh, that’s cute”, or left you scratching you heads as to why it possibly means?

mea culpa

We admit it. In all the excitement of launch week here at nook central, we clean forgot to check the feedback in-tray. “Opps, me bad”.

That was remedied last night with a personal apology written to the 10 or so people who had messages awaiting attention there. Rest assured, forthwith we promise to be more vigilant scanning the contact us messages for the bouquets and brickbats.

That said, feedback during nook’s first live week has been encouraging.

Some wrote to ask about a technical hitch encountered when registering, some needed help with their password, one person wrote saying they won’t be joining nook as a protest to the terms and conditions, and one Sydney-sider asked if nook was for Victorian members alone.

So far, we have generally been smothered with bouquets. Thanks all.

Welcome to nook everyone - enjoy the ride.
